How to keep your wooden chopping board clean and healthy
You’ve treated yourself to a beautiful new chunky, solid wood chopping board and it now has pride of place in your kitchen. But one question that’s now inevitably in your head is how an earth do you keep it clean and healthy? After all, it’s natural wood so it’s going to need something to stop it warping and drying out - so how exactly can you keep it clean and in pristine condition?
Use mild detergent to clean your wooden chopping board
You can scrub your chopping board with hot water and soap, but never submerge it in a sink of water, as this will cause it to crack as it dries! Make sure you always rinse and dry it thoroughly - use a sponge to soak up excess water from your board. Allow it to naturally and dry it upright on its edge; like you would a plate in a rack. Do not dry it in hot sunshine or close to your AGA, as will cause it to warp and split.
HOW TO REMOVE STAINS AND SMELLS FROM YOUR CHOPPING BOARD
If you want to eliminate the smell of garlic, onion or anything else from your board, rub it with coarse salt and half a lemon. Alternatively, you can use baking soda or vinegar - leave for a few minutes and rinse. You can also sanitise and deodorise your wooden chopping board by spraying it with a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part vinegar, and then wipe it down with a sponge or cloth.
Treating your wooden chopping board with mineral oil will keep it healthy
All of the wooden chopping boards we sell don’t leave our workshop until they have been treated with at least two coats of oil. We then advise you to continue conditioning the board with a food-safe oil, such as White Mineral Oil on a regular basis.
